On March 19th, All Saints 4th -8th grade students were treated to a private performance by the University Singers, a 60-member choir from the University of Maine. This choir, led by award winning choral conductor Fran Vogt, spends its spring break traveling to different schools and churches in the area (and beyond) to present their beautiful music.
"That was awesome! I want to sing like that!" remarked one student.
The concert took place at St. John's Church, which awed the singers with its beauty and by the acoustics, which magnified their beautiful voices as they sang various sacred music selections. Our students were amazed by the volume and energy brought by 60 voices raised together singing everything from Medieval Chant to African American Spirituals. After the 50-minute performance, students asked very intelligent questions during a Q&A. Mr. Vogt and choir members repeatedly mentioned the privilege it was to be able to hear their music in this sacred space, much of which was originally written for large churches with those very same acoustics, which is very different than the school gyms where the often perform. All were so respectful of the sacredness and uniqueness of the sanctuary.
Many thanks to All Saints music teacher, Sarah Hoskins, who worked for months to arrange the presentation and secure a date on the choir's busy tour schedule. We'd also like to thank our PTO for arranging a beautiful lunch provided by school families which was a special expression of Christian hospitality and kindness to many who perhaps have not experienced something like that before.
We hope to invite them to perform again in the future!
